Moving to KennelKeeper
Moving from spreadsheets, paper or another program.
Most breeders arrive with a spreadsheet, a folder of paper, another program, or all three. This is how each one comes in, and what to bring over first.
From a spreadsheet
Every plan
Save it as CSV, or keep it as an Excel workbook: KennelKeeper reads .csv, .xlsx and .xls, every sheet of a workbook. The columns are matched for you, and you can choose them yourself under Settings, Data Vault & Recovery, Import CSV.
From another program
Every plan
Export from it as CSV. There are ready layouts for AKC, Breeder's Edge, UKC, FCI and CKC exports, and K9-Data.org pedigrees come in directly. From MyAKC, the Dog Summary report as CSV reads more accurately than the PDF.
From paper
Breeder, or your own AI key
Photograph a registration certificate, a pedigree, a health certificate or a vaccination record, and the scanner reads it into a record for you to check before anything is saved.
What to bring over first

Your own animals
One row each, with the sire and dam, so the pedigrees link up as they come in. Columns such as Registered Name, Call Name, Breed, Sex, DOB, Color, Sire, Dam, Registration Number and Microchip are recognised by name.

Their ancestors
From the same spreadsheet, a K9-Data.org pedigree or a scanned certificate. Ancestors you never owned are kept apart from your own household, so they do not crowd your breeding screens.

Health records
Vaccinations and test results, scanned or typed, animal by animal. The scanner can be told which animal a page belongs to.

What is in progress
Heats and litters going on now are entered by hand, in Reproduction.
On the way in
- Nothing is saved until you have checked it on the review screen, where any field can be corrected.
- An animal you already have is matched on its microchip, then its registration number, then its name, and any difference is shown side by side. Your record stays unless you choose otherwise, and a blank never overwrites anything.
- Titles are split off registered names, so parents still link up when one record says CH and another does not.
- Dogs, cats and horses are told apart by their columns.
- No plan counts your animals or your litters.
